Velitchka Mihaleva was born in Kavarna, Bulgaria in 1972. After finishing a Technical school of industrial chemistry in Varna she went to Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and graduated in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry. In July 1998 she started her Ph.D. at the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Velitchka succesfully defended her Ph.D. thesis on the 17th of March, 2003 and is now allowed to carry the accompanying title of dr.. On the 1st of November, 2002, she started as a Post-doc at the Department of Chemometrics of the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, working on statistical analysis of biochemical data in collaboration with Organon.
