Fine: Chapter 5, Problem 30c

Problem   On page 218: How many electrons in an atom can be described by

c. The designation 4d?

Subject   Electron Configuration, Fine: pages 197-207.

Solution   If we look, for example, at the lower-left of figure 5.12, page 200, we see that there are 5 possible d-states, each possibly containing two electrons (with opposite spins). Table 5.6 on page 197 also gives this information. Therefore (see page 197), a d subshell may contain up to 10 electrons. This means that 10 electrons can be described by the 4d designation.
